Artist Statement

Lumumba Hall is the student accomodation for boys at the Makarere University in Kampala, Uganda's capital.  It got its name from the first Congolese president after independence, who is present in a statue made by students, that guards the entrance of the hall.  This photograph was taken during a school trip with primary school kids from Kyabahinga, a small village in south-western Uganda.  The trip was part of a photographic exhcange project with Dutch children.  Each group of kids photographed their lives with one way cameras, to show to the children of the other country.  After this they went on school trips that represented the history of their own country. For the children from Kyabahinga this was a big thing, since none of them had ever been to the big city.  It was a university holiday, and this gave us the opportunity to spend the two nights in Kampala in the hall.  These children had never before been in a multi-story house, let alone on a staircase like this.  It was therefore a major attraction, until the custodian turned on his t.v.

Andrea Stultiens
In her work Andrea Stultiens tries to tell stories.  Stories about people and their relation to their environment and stories about the use of photographic images. To do this Stultiens mostly works in long term projects.  Sometimes vernacular images are used to add to the narrative possibilities that her own images have. Mostly the projects are presented in book format, since here Stultiens controls the context of the work the most.  Nevertheless, Stultiens images also have their own aesthetic qualitites. Looking at the photographs like that, gives the opportunity to appropriate them, and build or project a new world around them.
