Artist Statement
I am a member of a group of people known as The Random Travelers Society. We gather together for a weekend once a year at a place chosen in a random fashion: at every meeting we pick the next location by throwing an inflatable globe in the air, and a blindfolded person picks the next spot by placing a finger on the globe. The rules dictate that we shall meet at the nearest bar to this spot. As the vast majority of Earth's surface is covered by water, the rule often leads us to remote islands. This photo was taken on a trip the Society made to Eastern Greenland in August 2008. A local fisherman took us on a long boat ride and finally left us off next to the mouth of a gigantic glacier. At this spot the members of the group convened for globe-throwing to select our next destination -- this turned out to be the Cape Verde islands off the coast of Western Africa. The place is unbelievably barren: no animals, no vegetation. The temperature only a few degrees above freezing point even in the summer.
