Artist Statement
From the series Brink, which is a collection of photographs capturing locations at a point in time when something is likely to change or begin. This specific image was created in April 2009, on the shore of Lake Erie, in Port Stanley, Ontario. Being only 40 kilometres south of London this quiet town is annually inundated throughout the summer months with throngs of heat seekers who are looking to rest and play in the short season of warmth that this area is blessed with. Vacant basketball courts, barren beaches, and unoccupied waters are what this location is physically comprised of, but this is not what draws the masses. Instead they are attracted to what they create for themselves upon arrival: relaxation, refuge, and play. By visiting this beach in early spring I was able to separate the physical identity of the waterfront from the emotional identity that we assign it, and admire it for what it really is.
